Councilwomen Kathy Mitchell and Gina Berry will return for another term on the Fanwood Borough Council in 2026. They ran unopposed in this year's general election. Congratulations to all of our winners!
Fanwood has been home to my husband and children for the last 20 years. As a longtime resident I have seen the progress our town has made and the great work done by the Mayor and Town Council that makes Fanwood one of the best places to live in New Jersey. I am honored to run for re-election to continue serving Fanwood.
I am currently the Managing Director of Business and Operations at Philip’s Academy, Paterson, NJ. Where I specialize in strategies that harmonize business processes while leveraging a holistic approach to organizational
development to assist in maximizing services.
I've been a consistently active participant in our community and schools throughout my time in Fanwood. I have chaired and sat on multiple committees such as Land Use, Public Safety, Administration and Finance, Library, Board of Health and Board of Education liaison. Over the years, I have been involved in many of Fanwood’s signature events including the Veteran Day, 5K, Fanny Wood Day and the annual holiday tree lighting.
I am running for re-election to continue the progress that the council is making towards improving infrastructure, working hard to maintain manageable taxes, and keeping our small town a place where everyone wants to live.
I am a retired Registered Nurse. My last jobs were as a Visiting Nurse and an MDS coordinator at Runnells Specialized Hospital. As an MDS coordinator, I was responsible for all the assessments for Medicare reimbursement. This required much organization, medical knowledge and patient/family interaction. If I had to do it all over again, I would still be a nurse in some capacity.
For more than 30 years, I have been the Social Concerns coordinator at IHM church. We have just reinstituted our Sheltering the Homeless program, whereby, homeless families spend 2-3 weeks a year at our parish. We feed our guests, breakfast and dinner and provide lunch. Our guests sleep at IHM and we provide a dry, safe environment for parents and children. We also have a Christmas giving tree which provides almost 1,000 gifts for local charities. Our Thanksgiving food collection provides many meals which also go into the community. My goal for the next year is to establish a “helping hands” program which will help both parishioners and reach into the community to help those in need.
I’m looking forward to this year’s campaign and hope the voters of Fanwood return me to my 9th term on the Council.
Democrat Mikie Sherrill stands with her family at her victory rally in East Brunswick after her decisive win over Republican Jack Ciatterelli, making her the first Democratic woman to become Governor of New Jersey.
Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill flanked by Fanwood Councilwoman Trisha Walsh and Councilwoman Gina Berry who is seeking re-election with running mate Kathy Mitchell, not pictured. Sherrill is at the top of the ticket for Governor. The occasion was Women's Equality Day, which commemorates women getting the right to vote on Aug. 26, 1920, so the spirited rally at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Plainfield was indeed appropriate.
Democratic Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill is campaigning statewide for Governor against Republican Jack Ciattarelli. Sherrill's campaign is a clear, sane breath of fresh air from the MAGA tropes her opponent continues to promote.
While Democrats hold the edge in voter registrations in New Jersey, those margins have been eroded by aggressive Republican campaigns that strongly support the MAGA mission of President Trump.
Congresswoman Sherrill's recent appearance in Plainfield (pictured) brought praise from regional Democratic women celebrating Women's Equality Day.
The Fanwood Democratic Committee joins the Sherrill campaign in urging everyone to vote. Despite the noise from the White House about mail-in voting, it remains alive and legal in New Jersey, which also has early voting starting October 25th. Of course, you can vote in person on Election Day, Tuesday, November 4th.
Congratulations to Gina and Kathy who ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination for Fanwood Council.
Some of our Democratic Committee members attended "meet the candidate" events in our area during February and early March. We met Democratic gubernatorial candidates Steve Sweeney, Mikie Sherrill, Josh Gottheimer, Sean Spiller and Ras Baraka. Steve Fulop did not participate. These events were sponsored by the Democratic committees of Fanwood, Westfield, Summit, Cranford and Garwood. Attendees were local Democratic committee members and elected officials. These in-person meetings and Q&As tell you so much more about candidates than their ads and mailers. The New Jersey primary is June 10th with early voting beginning on June 6th.

Both the Fanwood and Union County Democratic Committees are supporting Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill for Governor. Sherrill represents the 11th Congressional district encompassing portions of Essex, Morris and Passaic Counties. She is a 10-year veteran of the U.S. Navy as a helicopter pilot. She later became a lawyer and joined the U.S. Attorney's office in New Jersey. She's been in Congress since 2019. Members of the Fanwood committee met Congresswoman Sherrill at a March 1st event in Westfield where she fielded questions on a wide variety of subjects. She is seen here pictured with Fanwood Councilwoman Trisha Walsh.
Councilwomen Gina Berry and Kathy Mitchell were endorsed for re-election by the Fanwood Democratic Committee at its annual nominating meeting on March 14, 2025. Councilwoman Berry, a school administrator will be running for her second term. Kathy, a retired RN, will be running for her ninth. Both will be on the ballot in the New Jersey primary on June 10th, 2025.

Fanwood and Scotch Plains voters will be asked to consider a scaled down proposal for acquiring and maintaining the former LaGrande School on South Avenue to accomodate pre-kindergarten classes and to upgrade HVAC and other infrastructure systems across all schools. If passed, the $44-million project would add an average of $253-$288 per year to residents' property tax bills and would ensure $11.4-million in state aid. Last year, voters turned down a more ambitious plan that would have cost twice as much.
Polls open on Tuesday, January 28, 2pm-8pm. Click here to find your polling place.
